Changhan  Kim's fifth solo exhibition will continue through December first. Gallery Gonggan has changed its name (formerly Gallery Gonggan 21) and has moved to a new location: Jakdong-lee Samdong-myun Ulju-gun.  Changhan Kim was invited as the first artist of its opening show.     Changhan Kim shows 18 pieces of his oil paintings and watercolors in this exhibition. We can see his continuous affection toward nature and humanity. His empathy with landscape is mediated by the dragonfly. The series titled "the memories," "the flying," and "the dragonfly - let's fly" is composed of images of dragonflies in flight or at rest on the surface of water and aquatic plants.

Kim says, "I'm trying to maintain my identity through focussing on actual experiences in my own time." This is his main thought about this exhibition: "The metaphoric image of the dragonfly expresses people persevering with a healthy mindset through the dark and painful actualities of life."

For Kim, nature is not a simple aesthetical subject but a medium through which to see real life and to try to improve the situation with the power of a strong will. He said about the dragonfly the subject matter in this exhibition. "This dragonfly which arrives without sound and departs without leaving any trace looks like nature itself. The wriggle of its flight looks like resistance against the moment, the present it doesn't want to lose."    We can see his view on nature in his techniques of painting and drawing --  the energetic power of life generated in the rhythmical movements of his brush and knife strokes. The effect created from the mixture of craft and coincidence deepen of his art toward the essence of life.  - reporter Chungae Chung -

Nature is interpreted variously by different people at different times. The artist's role is that of an antenna conducting the mutual response between nature and the spectator.
The artist who expresses nature does not force any message but enables the spectator to access nature through and the artist's own character via the work.

    Changhan
Kim (35, a teacher of the Ulsan Art High School) expresses nature without distortion on his canvas.
He doesn't want to reconstruct or invent nature. He express nature itself as reflected in his senses.
The various shapes of nature changing with the wind and the sun overlap in his various images of nature. We can see the artist fused with nature on his canvas. The energetic  movements of the brush strokes show the vibrancy of nature: unlimited energy.                   -reporter Youngchull Cheon

Changhan Kim's third solo exhibition will be show in the gallery of the Modney Department Store from 1/12 to 7/12. 31 drawings and paintings will be exhibited. The subject matter is the four seasons, trees and memories.
He draws the changing nature as a metaphor for human life. His work is expressive of the force of life and the desire to live purely and naturally.

He hopes strongly to recover a purer humanity, a child mind rescued from a human nature adulterated by materialism. The memories of his childhood playing in the rural districts evoke the importance of the nature and purity in modern times.   Changhan Kim works mainly with the subject matter of nature and his daily life.           -reporter Changsik Kim

Changhan Kim's solo exhibition titled "Life and Nature" will be shown from 11/10 to 11/16 in the Yoon Gallery. He received his BFA and MFA degrees in the Hong-ik University, majoring in painting, and has participated in roughly 20 exhibitions in Seoul, Ulsan, Youngju and other places. He made his first solo exhibition in 1991 in Batang-gol Gallery located in Seoul.
In that exhibition the main subject matter of his works was his personal experience of daily life and nature. This is his second exhibition on this subject matter.

He words his attitude toward his art in this way: "Making of art is a part of life. So, we can make aesthetically beautiful art from a faithful life.    Daily life is poignantly expressed in this exhibition: images of exhausted people who await a train in a desolate subway station, a people corrupted by a material civilization which appears looks very splendid and wealthy, the image of vigorous life in a midsummer. These are his attempts to express various mental states he feels in his daily life.                       - reporter Uoosoo Cheon
