Painting is a joy

Ever since I was very young I¡¯ve found playful Joy in painting.

It¡¯s always been a favorite activity.

When I¡¯m painting, it¡¯s still among the most pleasurable times of my life.

±×¸²Àº, Á¦ ÀÚ½ÅÀÌ ¾î¸± ¶§ºÎÅÍ ±×¸° ÀÌÀ¯´Â,

±×³É Áñ±â´Â °ÍÀÌ°í ³ë´Â °ÍÀÌ°í, ¾î·ÈÀ» ¶§ °¡Àå Áñ°Å¿î °ÍÀ̾úÁÒ,

Captivated by Plum blossoms

I was initially attracted by the mysterious beauty of plum blossoms, and how they are the first flower to emerge from the cold winter.

Their fresh, rich colors make it hard to believe they¡¯re coming out of old lifeless looking trees.

I was further intrigued by the Korean stories relating to this marvelous plant,

½âÀº °í¸ñ¿¡¼­ ÇǾ´Â °í¿î Çü¿ëÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Â ±×·± ºû±òµé¿¡ ½Ã¼±ÀÌ ¸¹ÀÌ ²ø·È°í,

Painting at Tongdosa

It¡¯s been 6 years since I first began examining plum trees as a subject.

In the first and second year, I didn¡¯t notice any remarkable inspiration toward plum blossoms, but during the third year a deep appreciation developed.

Not only that, but I discovered the plum blossoms at Tongdosa (Buddhist monastery) are more beautiful than those in any other place.

ÇØ°¡ ½×ÀÌ´Ù º¸´Ï±î 6³âÀÌ µÈ °ÍÀÌÁö¸¸,

ù° µÑ° ÇرîÁö´Â Ưº°ÇÑ °¨Èï(Êïýé)À» ¸ø ´À²¼Áö¸¸,

3³â°ºÎÅÍ´Â ²ÉÀÇ ¾Æ¸§´Ù¿òµµ ±×·¸Áö¸¸(ÁÁ¾ÒÁö¸¸), Åëµµ»ç(÷×ÓøÞÑ)¿¡¼­  ÀÌ·¸°Ô Ưº°ÇÏ°Ô ÇÇ´Â ²ÉÀÌ ´Ù¸¥ µ¥¿¡¼­ ÇÇ´Â ²Éº¸´Ù ÈξÀ ´õ Á¦ ¸¶À½À» ¸¹ÀÌ ²ø¾ú½À´Ï´Ù.

Modern Korean Art

Although Plum blossoms are one of the most common subjects, being from ¡®The Four Gracious Plants¡¯ (in traditional Korean painting), I wanted to portray them in a more modern way, while still preserving their relation to Korean culture.

±×¸®°í ¸ÅÈ­°¡ ÀüÅë¹Ì¼ú¿¡¼­ 4±ºÀÚÀÇ Çϳª·Î¼­ ÁÖµÈ ¼ÒÀçÀÌÁö¸¸,

ÀÌ°ÍÀ» ÅëÇؼ­ Çѱ¹ÀûÀ̸鼭µµ Çö´ëÀûÀÎ °ÍÀ¸·Î ½ÂÈ­½ÃÅ°Áö ¾ÊÀ»±î ±×·± °Íµµ »ý°¢ÇØ º¸°Ô µÇ¾ú°í.

Artistic Confidence

Of course the possible choices of ¡°what to paint¡± are vastly diverse.

I could have chosen a myriad of other subjects, but I selected plum blossoms.

It was not only my personal interest in the subject that compelled me. I was confident I could depict the blossoms, a traditional subject, in a new and interesting way.

This desire to reinterpret grew more and more ambitious.

´Ù¸¥ °ÍÀ» ¸¹ÀÌ ±×¸± ¼öµµ Àִµ¥ ¸ÅÈ­¸¦ ±×¸®°Ô µÈ °ÍÀº,

±×¸¸Å­ ¸ÅÈ­°¡ Á¦ ¸¶À½¼Ó¿¡ °­ÇÏ°Ô  ²ø¸®°Ô µÇ´Â °Íµµ ÀÖÁö¸¸,

¸ÅÈ­¸¦ ÅëÇؼ­ »õ·Î¿î ÀÛÇ°À¸·Î ³ªÅ¸³¾ ¼ö ÀÖ°Ú´Ù´Â ÀڽۨÀÌ »ý±ä °ÅÁÒ,

±×·¯´Ï±î ´õ Å« ÀÛÇ° ´õ ¸¹Àº ÀÛÇ°À» ÇÏ°Ô µÇ´Â °Í °°½À´Ï´Ù.

A Spiritual-Meditative State

I believe that by entering into a meditative state, with the act of art making, I am able to more acutely express my individuality and unique perception.

All the work I¡¯ve ever made contributes to a fuller picture of who I am as a person and artist. Being aware of my own spirituality allows me to appreciate the unexplainable, and at times, experience insights in art and life. This helps me think about my past and anticipate the future. It¡¯s only been 6 years of painting plum blossoms. I am curious and excited about how I will feel after 10 years.
