역동의 울주 - 금번 전시는 자연과 인간의 역동적(力動的)인 삶의 모습을 겨울바다 간절곶 일출을 중심으로 현장에서 그린 대작(大作) 위주로 전시한다. 아울러 생명의 기운과 신비스런 아름다움이 넘치는 대운산 계곡의 매화와 봄의 환희를 그린 작품도 함께 전시한다.
Dynamic Ulju- This exhibition is mainly about masterpieces which focus on dynamic life of mankind and nature. Those were expressed by sunrise at winter ocean and most of them were drawn on sight of Gangeolgot. Those paintings which shows the joy of spring and exploding beauty and vital energy of Maehwa (Plum Tree) blossoms of Daewoon-san will also be on the exhibition

2021, 춤추는 겨울바다 Dancing Winter Sea, Oil on linen 162.2x655.5cm 100F 5개(연작)
작품설명 Explanation 1
이곳 겨울바다 간절곶 일출을 그린 것도 10여년 된다.
그동안 간절곶 일출을 새벽부터 밤까지 현장에서 그렸는데 연작으로 그리고 싶어서, 1년 전 작은 캔버스에 실험적으로 그린 뒤, 지난 12월~1월 큰 캔버스에 그렸다.
It's been 10 years since I started drawing the sunrise at Ganjeolgot. I used to paint the sunrise on sight at dawn. I painted some night scenes as well. At some point, I decided to create a series of sunrises and night scenes. I made a trial on a small canvas, a year ago, and then started to paint on big canvases during December through January.
동해바다는 겨울에 파도가 좋다. 제목도 처음엔 일출 시리즈의 연장선 이었는데, ‘춤추는 겨울바다’로 변경했다. 즉, 파도가 춤을 추는 것이다. 역동적인 생명이 살아있는 감동이 강렬하게 와 닿는다. 거기에 일출의 불꽃이 용광로처럼 찬란하게 빛나는 모습이 무척 인상 깊다. 그래서 그전에는 일출시리즈를 그렸다면 이 그림은 파도의 동적인 움직임이 더 강조되고 있다.
I thought "Winter Waves of the East Sea" was amazing. However, I changed the name of the series to "Dancing Winter Sea", which was originally just a sunrise series. Unlike other sunrise paintings, I emphasized dynamic waves. They strongly reveal the dynamic energy and the affection of life. The reflection of the rising sun looks like flames from molten lava. It is also very impressive.
그리고 이 장소는 특별하다.
동북아시아에서 해가 가장 빨리 뜬다는 몇 초 차이의 의미/가치 보다 이곳에서 매일 해가 떠오르는 자연의 영원한 아름다움의 소중한 가치와, 오른쪽에 위치한 고리 원전은 매우 특별한 관심을 끄는 곳으로 태양의 에너지와 인공의 에너지가 공존을 이루면서 우리삶이 좀 더 행복하고 안전하기를 기원하는 마음이 갈 때 마다 든다.
Ganjeolgot is a unique place it is the place where the sun rises the earliest in north/east Asia. It is also located right beside the Gori Nuclear Power Station. It always reminds me about the coexistence of natural energy and artificial energy.
특히 겨울 바다를 새벽에 보면, 추운날씨에도 유조선 배들과 작은 고기잡이 배들이 분주히 오고가는 모습에 큰 감동을 받는다. 따라서 이런 것들을 한 화면에 담은 삶의 기록이다. 그리고 좌측과 우측의 인물들은 실제 현장에서 만난 인물들이다.
2020 겨울~2021년 봄 마스크를 쓴 삶의 기록이다. 정말 역동적이고 활력 넘치는 그림이다. 제목도 역동의 울주, 간절곶에서 우리나라의 무궁한 발전과 번영을 기원하는 마음을 담았다.
Every time I pass by Ganjeolgot I also get impressed by the scene of the tankers and fishing boats in the distance, busily moving at dawn on the winter sea. So these five paintings are a record of all these in a single scene. The people on the left side and right are actual people who I met while I was painting. You can see facemasks on some people during the winter of 2020 winter through spring 2021. "Dancing Winter Sea" is a very dynamic and energetic work of art. The title contains my wish for the infinite development and prosperity of our country at Ganjeolgot.

작품설명 Explanation 2
이 그림은 실제 현장에서 느끼고 본 그대로이다.
사실 일반사람들은 이런 광경을 보기 힘들다, 겨울에 일출을 많이 찾긴 하지만...
간절곶은 해변에 바위가 많은데 바위에 파도가 부딪치면서 해가 떠오를 때면 마치 용광로처럼 불덩어리가 일어난다. 마치 물감을 풀어놓은 듯합니다.
그리고 겨울에 영하 10도까지 내려가면 해가 뜨면서 온도 차이에 의해 안개가 피어나는 해무현상이 나타날 때는 이곳이 사람이 사는 곳인지 천상의 세계인지 착각할 정도다.
This painting represents exactly what I felt and saw in the real world. Even though a lot of people visit to watch the winter sunrise, it is quite difficult to see this scene. There are a lot of rocks on the sea shore of Ganjeolgot and every time when the waves break there, the reflecting flames of the rising sun are like melted lava. It looks like living breathing colors of paint. And when the temperature goes below -10 degrees Celsius, sea fog rises because of the temperature difference between the air and the water. The mysterious atmosphere convinces us that where we stand is a heavenly space.
이 그림을 그린 것은 2013년으로 시간이 좀 지났지만 늘 그때의 감동을 잊을 수 없다.
정말 한겨울에 이런 모습을 볼 수 있는 것은 한 손 꼽을 정도다.
가장 실제적인 감동을 담은 것이다. 두고두고 잊을 수 없다.
It had been a while since I painted this painting in 2013, I still remember the great impression from that time. It was really hard to capture the exact moment and I depicted the most realistic impression as possible. I will always strive to do that.
작품설명 Explanation 3
2020~2021년 4월 달까지도 세계적으로 마스크를 써야 할 상황이지만, 겨울과 봄에 매화를 그릴 때면 사람들이 많이 찾기 때문에 코로나를 피해서 이곳 대운산 계곡에서 그림을 많이 그렸다.
산속에서 혼자 그림 그리면 굳이 마스크 쓸 필요도 없고 안전하기에 이곳을 자주 찾아오다보니 이곳의 고매와 수억년에 걸쳐 형성된 바위와 계곡의 아름다움에 눈 뜨게 됐었고, 진달래가 피는 것에 깊은 인상을 받았다.
I spent a lot of time working in the valley of Daewon Mountain to avoid a lot of people who visit to see Maehwa (Plum blossoms) in other busy locations. Still everyone was wearing facemasks which felt unnatural but necessary. Being isolated alone in the mountains, I was able to let go of my daily worries and fears. I was able to confront the beauty of the old Maehwa, and the rocks and valleys that were formed over hundreds of millions of years ago. All of that plus azaleas blooming was just sensational.
이 그림은 앞으로 부분 부분을 확대해서 연작으로 그리려고 구상 중인데.
다시 겨울이 찾아오면 마치 병풍처럼 여러 부분을 확대해서 시간의 흐름을 다양한 구도로 환상적인 모습을 그리려 한다.
I am planning to make a series of paintings which focuses on different part of this scenario. I will try to emphasize the diverse points of the single time by focusing on the different parts of the individual views and create a fantastic story through dynamic colors of paint.
이 그림은 진달래의 환상을 그렸는데, 계곡엔 늘 싱그러운 이끼가 겨울에도 피고 새봄을 기다리는 마음을 그렸다. 제목도 ‘매화-공적화개空寂花開’, ‘진달래-공적화개’ 이다. 즉, 계곡을 흐르는 물이 수많은 바위에 부딪치는 혼돈의 과정을 거쳐서 물도 사람의 마음도 고요한 평온을 찾게 된다.
This painting shows the amazing azalea which resembles the heart of evergreen moss, expecting the new spring. The titles of the two paintings are Maehwa-Gong Jeok Wha Gae and Azalea-Gong Jeok Wha Gae. I will endeavor to paint the reality that is like water, after passing through countless chaotic events that finally reaches a place of inner peace and harmony of humanity.

“간절곶 일출의 현장에서 여명이 밝아오는 새벽부터 화구를 챙겨서 일출을 맞이하는 준비 단계부터 스토리는 시작된다. 시시각각으로 변화하는 일출은 극히 짧은 한순간에 허망하게 끝나버린다. 그러나 김창한 화백은 긴박한 일출장면을 매일 목격하면서 그 느낌을 오롯이 캔버스에 담는다. 김화백의 눈은 일출을 포착하는 동시에 장엄한 일출을 구경나온 주변의 관광객들에게도 쏠린다.
사람들은 단순히 일출을 보기 위해 오는 것은 아니다. 누구나 마음속에 간절한 소망을 지니고 있다. 일출을 맞이하면서 자신과 가족의 안녕을 비는 동시에 소원성취를 기도한다. 그림 속에는 이런 관광객들이 여러 명 묘사되어 있고, 휴대폰으로 일출을 담는 관광객을 등장시키기도 한다.
일출과는 무관하게 바다에서 고기를 잡아 생계를 유지하는 어부들의 작은 배도 등장한다. 파도에 속절없이 흔들리는 고기잡이 배 뿐만 아니라 저 멀리 수평선 위에 유유히 떠나가는 거대한 외항선도 얼핏 보인다.
간절곶 바닷가로 펼쳐진 작은 산의 행렬, 커다란 건물의 실루엣도 아스라한 느낌이 들게 표현하였다. 또한 바닷가 바위로 세차게 몰아치며 포말을 흩날리는 거친 파도도 출현한다. 거세게 일렁이는 파도는 인간 세상의 생존 투쟁, 더 나아가서는 불교에서 말하는 아수라장을 형용하고 있는 듯하다. 이 모든 걸 지배하는 것은 바다 위로 솟구친 장엄하게 빛나는 태양이다.
김화백이 나타내는 ‘춤추는 겨울바다’는 가슴 뭉클해지는 일출, 거친 생존의 현장, 저마다의 꿈의 성취를 간절하게 비는 기도하는 사람, 바다에 기대 살아가는 어부, 어촌 주민들의 삶의 현장이 녹아 들어가 있는 인간 세상의 축약도다.“
