Artist statement :
I grew up in a monastery with many of my uncles and relatives being monks and novices. I spent the majority of my youth there. Buddhism and the culture surrounding it is something I am innately familiar with. The idea behind my paintings is to bring peacefulness to the audience, both from my monk paintings and my landscape paintings. The monks in my paintings can be seen facing away from the viewer. It signifies the buddhist thinking, they are all trying to strive for Nirvana, leaving behind all the human possessions and problems while trying to find a peaceful state.

Nirvana is the highest state in Buddhism, it is free of attachments and reincarnation. All the worldly passions and possessions are left behind, for eternal bliss and happiness. But in some of the paintings, you can see young novices looking back, which implies they are unsure about the path they have chosen. They are not ready to leave the human world behind. Be it their loved ones, their possession, or other desires of the flesh. Since Myanmar is a country with Buddhism as the main religion, you can see the Buddhist culture everywhere you look.

The colors and composition of my paintings reflect the land of Myanmar; the color of gold and heat. The background of my paintings are very simple yet immense. It helps to make the subject, the monks in my paintings, pop. They seems to be walking on an endless plain, reaching for Nirvana. The audience can see how immense the ground is and the path they have chosen is not easy. At the same time, it also helps the viewers to get in a state of peaceful meditation. It's almost ethereal and infinite. The painting is just the story of the monks on their Journey to Nirvana, they walk tirelessly on, with their shadows cast on this boundless earth.

VIDEO Translation

CHK : Hello Min Wae Aung, Nice to meet you.
MWA : Nice to meet you.
CHK : I am very happy. Very proud that I came to here, your studio. Tell me about your art.

¡°Talking about two landscape paintings¡±

MWA : I like nature. Like these landscape paintings, my new series. I like strong contrast lightnings in painting, also likes realistic style. But different from reality a bit, it comes from the artists¡¯ mind. In my landscape paintings, even the small figures, I paint them in great detail, and well proportioned. That is my style.

CHK : Where did you get this idea?
MWA : When I am traveling in Myanmar.
CHK : Which area?
MWA : This painting is from the Arewaddy River. The title is Born of the Arewaddy. It is the start of the river Arewaddy. It is in Kachin Sate. It is a place famous for it¡¯s abundance in Jade gems.
CHK : I have strong impressions from these paintings. Is it oil or acrylic?
MWA : It is acrylic.

¡°Talking about people series¡±

CHK : You are also painting another series, the monks and people series, painted from behind. What is the meaning?
MWA : These paintings are of villagers. The paintings show them coming back from working, or going to work. ( Yellow painting ) These people are on the way to sell on the road side, by the bus stop on highway road.
( Red painting ) Farmers going back home after a day¡¯s work.
(Yellow painting with rainbow people ) These people are also farmers.

CHK : I think this painting¡¯s color is very bright in a simple modern style.
MWA : I also paint the design on the cloths very detailed. You can see it on the longyi design, very beautiful.

CHK : I look at many Myanmar women, they enjoy dressing in very colorful cloths.
MWA : You can also see flowers and combs adorning the hair.

¡°Family in the rain painting ¡°

CHK : The Upper painting, it is very impressive.
MWA : It is in the raining season. The family is on their way somewhere, under heavy rain. Only one umbrella for the family of three. You can see not he child¡¯s face thanakha, it is a natural make up, it comes from grounded tree bark.

¡°Shwedagon Painting¡±

CHK : I looked at another Shwedagon Pagoda painting. Can you explain about it? I¡¯ve got a very strong impression about it. When did you paint it ?
MWA : I painted this in 2012.

CHK : Among your paintings which one is your oldest? I want to see your old style.
¡°Man with tattoo¡±
MWA : This is my old style. I painted this in 1985. It is oil on canvas. The subject is of a tattooed man.

¡° Shoe Painting¡±
MWA : This is also my oil painting. This is from 1982. At that time my painting signature is in Burmese. And I also put my English signature underneath it. That is my real slipper from art school. I used that slipper.

CHK : You have many good memories.
¡°Market Day¡±
MWA : This is Kalaw Market Day.

CHK : That is traditional market. Very impressive.
MWA : Yes traditional market day in Kalaw City.

CHK : Actually you have many many diverse paintings.
MWA : These are also my watercolor paintings, both monks and landscape series.
CHK : Thank you my friend. See you.

When the three rolled canvases works arrive to me, I will make the canvas.
And then I will try to send the 9 works and another works to Cha Man so he will display the 9 works for the show and keep/control another works.

But please remember another 3 works(50P, 10F, 10F) will be exhibit in Daejeon Art Show in December. So right now I don¡¯t know the result. I will discuss with you after the exhibition.

< Negotiation things while you are in Seoul >

Part-A, Future plans of the Art project : 2023~2024
1, LA Art Show in February https://www.laartshow.com
2, Solo Exhibitions in Korea
3, Auction in Seoul
4, Overseas Exhibitions

Part-B,
1, Contract of the upper future plans
2, Contract and confirm (insurance if needed) of the all of the left works
3, Share the benefit – Basically he wants to share 50% 50% when the works are sold. Please remember that this is a general case in the commercial professional art business in a Korean gallery or Art company. And this time he will follow to put/open the price of Min Wae Aung¡¯s works which you suggested me. But if Cha Man needs to discount, he will discuss with you. Let¡¯s discuss for more details when we meet in Seoul.
4, Others – Feel free to say/discuss anytime to Cha Man and me (Kim Chang Han). But please remember that I am not a business man but a good friend with you and Cha Man. So all of the art business responsibilities are depend on the negotiation of between Cha Man and you/Min Wae Aung.

Best regards.
See you.

Kim Chang Han

ps.
I got the Covid-19 virus from Dec 19. I was very careful for three years but I don¡¯t know where and when the virus infect me recently.
Luckly I had four times Covid vaccine before so now my physical condition is not serious. Just only my throat is not good at night but it is ok at day time. But I need to take a rest and do something slowly for a week.
Like compulsively, I have to stay at my house or studio until 25th. Hope my physical condition get well from tomorrow.
You and your family need very careful not to meet the Covid-19.
There are about tens of thousands people are new infected by the virus everyday in Korea....But in Korea, our general life is no problem.

I will send a message again maybe tomorrow about my works in Myanmar.
Now I need go to bed...
