On TV last night about my recent Art of En Plein Air of ‘Sea - Vital Fantasy’

The work in this series is not meant to be only about beauty, it is intended to reveal a dynamic interplay between nature and human energy, perhaps the key to a joyful of life. Ultimately, it’s why I try to capture the wind, sun, and surf. It is there, where joy seems the most alive. That is also why I physically go to the place and experience it first hand. While I paint I can bask in that warmth. I don’t approach it with a detailed plan. Like the surfers I am trying to go with the flow. I’m not concerned with being too vague or abstract. I am confident that since it is coming from my actual experience, it is my expression’s truest form.

The Meaning of the work
Painting a work on the beach is always challenging and adventurous during winter. The dynamic and vibrant seascape always resonates in my heart. Waking up at dawn to greet the sunrise in sub-zero temperatures is a uniquely winter experience. In Ulsan “Ganjeolegot”, I see the bright lights of large ocean-going vessels and fishing boats at work before sunrise. Watching the shining manmade lights and the glimmering sunshine fill my heart with energy, inspiring me to work hard at painting them.

I struggle against nature while painting En Plein Air at the seaside in winter. The temperature is cold even in the daytime. I wear layer upon layer of clothing and try to work as quickly and efficiently as possible. I never bore of painting in the same place day after day, even for an entire month. The unpredictable weather and the constantly changing and magnificent scenery keep me motivated and inspired.

“Ganjeolgot” is the boundary between Busan and Ulsan. There is a clear view of the Gory Nuclear Power Plant. When I am here, I realize the coexistence of the energy from the eternal sun and the energy from the nuclear power that keep us alive, creating prosperity and abundance. This reminds me of the importance of protecting the environment by keeping it clean for our next generation.

The constantly rushing waves hit the rocks, explode, and are swept away by the refreshing breeze, as if performing a wild dance. I capture that moment. The water droplets glistening in the burning rays of the sun are the epitome of beauty. In this perfect moment I enjoy the bliss of life.

나는 모험적인 혹은 아름답고 신비한 풍경이 있는 유투브를 즐겨본다.
위 영상은 내가 그동안 본 것 중 최고다.
처음부터 끝까지 봤지만 반복적으로 본다.
그 이유는,

자전거 하나로 험난한 아프리카 대륙을 남쪽에서 북쪽까지 지나면서 온갖 역경을 극복한 감동적인 한 인간의 의지도 놀랍지만, 그가 생생하게 보고 느낀 아프리카 대륙의 자연과 인간의 있는 그대로의 모습이 더 가슴에 와 닿았다. 즉, 오늘날 현대 문명 속에 살고 있는 수많은 사람들의 모습과는 전혀 다른 세상이지만 그들도 지구상에서 동시대를 함께 살아가는 인간이기 때문이다.

삶에 대한 근원적인 물음을 갖게 한다.
돈/지위/인간관계/시간/건강...그리고 인간의 한계를...
나는 누구인가? 어떻게 살아야하고? 어디로 가야할 것인가?

본 비디오 후반부에 한 도시를 지날 때 수많은 어린이들이 자전거 타는 그를 따라오면서 해맑게 웃던 모습이 너무나 인상 깊다. 현재 대한민국은 세계에서 유래를 찾을 수 없는 출산율 최저 기록을 계속 갱신중이다. 이대로라면 대한민국이 지구상에서 없어지는 건 시간문제다. 내 어린 시절 시골/도시 어디를 가든 대한민국은 많은 아이들이 넘쳤다.

해결해야할, 극복해야할 것들이 너무 많다. 무엇보다 사회 지도자들부터 이 문제에 앞장서야겠고, 그런 자격이 없는 사람은 즉 결혼도 하지 않고 자식도 낳지 않는 사람은 그 자유로움의 책임을 져야하고, 어떠한 공직에도 발을 딛지 못하게 해야 한다. 그리고 자식을 많이 낳는 사람들과 그 자녀한테는 파격적인 대우를 해줘야한다. 아울런 이렇게 만든 사회적인 문제를 하루빨리 바로 잡고, 인구가 넘치는 역동적인 국가들과도 지혜를 나눠야 한다.

새해 첫날 : 아침엔 해맞이 하러 집 앞 앞산에 올랐고, 오후엔 뒷산(울산 문수산)에 자전거를 타고 올라갔다. 특히, 아파트 대표분 들께서 해맞이 하고 산에서 내려온 주민들을 위해 맛있는 떡국과 떡을 제공해 주었다. 이웃들과 함께 나눠먹으니 마음이 훈훈했다.

새해 나의 4대 목표 중 가장 중요한 것이 몸과 마음의 건강인데,
나도 언젠가 자전거로 한반도 남쪽 끝에서 북쪽까지 달릴 날을 꿈꿔 봐야겠다.
그리고 20년이 넘도록 나를 기다리고 있는 나이지리아 친구도 만나고 그곳에서 캔버스를 펼치고 그림 그리러 검은 대륙 아프리카에 갈 날도 꿈꿔 봐야겠다.

내일 새벽엔 다시 겨울 바다 간절곶에서 캔버스를 펼치고 내가 살아있음을, 역동의 울산이 살아있음을 그려볼 것이다.

I enjoy watching YouTube videos with adventurous, beautiful or mysterious scenes.
In the upper video is the best I've ever seen.
I watched it from beginning to end, but I am watching it repeatedly.
The reason is that,

The impressive will of one man who overcame all kinds of adversity while riding a bicycle across the difficult African continent from south to north was amazing, but what I am deeply touched my heart even more was the nature of the African continent and the human beings that he vividly saw and felt.
In other words, it is a completely different world from the countless people living in modern civilization today, but they are also human beings living together on Earth at the same time.

It makes me ask fundamental questions about life.
Money/status/relationships/time/health...and human limitations...
Who am I? How should I live? Where should I go?

At the end of this video, as he passes through a city, the sight of many children following him on a bicycle and smiling brightly is very impressive. Currently, South Korea continues to set records for the lowest birth rate in the world.
If this situation continues, it is only a matter of time before Korea disappears from the earth. When I was young, no matter where I went in the countryside or city, Korea was full of children.

There are so many things to solve and overcome.
Above all, social leaders must take the lead in this issue, and people who do not have such qualifications, that is, those who do not marry or have children, must take responsibility for their freedom and be prevented from holding any public office. And people who have many children and their children should be support many things.
We must quickly correct these social problems and share our wisdom with dynamic countries with overcrowded populations.

First day of the new year,
In the morning, I climbed the mountain in front of my house to see the first rising sun this year, and in the afternoon, I rode my bike up the mountain behind (Ulsan Munsu Mountain). In particular, the apartment representatives provided delicious rice cake soup and rice cakes for the residents who came down from the mountain to greet the sun. It was heart-warming to share it with my neighbors.

The most important of my four goals for the new year is the health of my body and mind. I, too, should dream of one day being able to ride a bicycle from the southern tip to the northern part of the Korean peninsula.

Tomorrow, at dawn, I will set the canvas again at Ganjeolgot in the winter sea and draw that I am alive and that dynamic Ulsan is alive.
