My consistent interest in art making is to pursue pure and healthy images of humanity and nature: The everyday lives of people, and the purity of nature which overflows with the force of life. I think that nature is not merely a subject to be seen aesthetically but an intermediary which helps me to perceive reality truly and to improve it. I dream of people elated by the harmony between the ideal and the real.

I also think the pleasure of art making is very important. I like to draw and paint about natural phenomena such as dragonflies, fruit farms, flowers, falling leaves, and the ever-changing earth. I also like to illustrate fragments of daily life on my canvases.

When I see the flying of the dragonfly, I sense philosophical meaning and feel a selflessness. I am infused with strong energy from the fresh fruit farms colored with deep green which sometimes looks like the east sea and sometimes looks like a black iron plate. The apples pulse with a red so much like blood that I almost expect them to burst, splashing me with the stuff of life.

I am conscious of the ways in which the subjects of my art fit with my constitution and with a perhaps particularly Korean emotional sensibility.
I try to stick to experiences from my real life and times, striving to locate my identity relative to my heritage and a positive vision of the future. I bring to this endeavor a heartfelt appreciation for mysterious nature overflowing with the force of life, and a conception of life as essentially beautiful and pure.

I think visual rhythm and taste are most important.
Visual rhythm flows from the movements of brush and knife. The force of life emerges from the visual rhythm. In this regard, there's no division in technique between abstract images and the figurative images.
I also have much concern about the deliberate or accidental effects arising from the specific character of painting materials. Materials are potent ingredients in the stew of a painting

Oils and watercolors are my preferred materials. Recently, I have been using acrylic paint and other mixed media, but I find oils to be of superior clarity, transparency, adhesiveness, texture and versatility of shade and hue.

Contemplating on Landscape and Inner World of Kim Chang Han
- by Kim Seokhee, Professor at Kyung Hee University in Seoul

I view his paintings as a performance. He travels around the world and is unaffected by the crowd that surrounds him. He handles his brush like a dancer in a performance. His rough yet precise sketches creates vitality through unhindered rhythms. Therefore it is both rough and elegant. Roughness and elegance are qualities that are hard to coexist, but just like design and abstraction, roughness and elegance rule his paintings because for him painting is a ritual and performance. This is exhibition is a record of his powerful
performance.

The ¡°Sea - Vital Fantasy¡± series began while visiting Australia in 2005. I took my interest of seascapes home and began expanding on the series in Busan/Ulsan by 2012. I will continue this series adding foreign locations as I get the opportunity to travel.
The work in this series is not meant to be only about beauty, it is intended to reveal a dynamic interplay between nature and human energy, perhaps the key to a joyful of life. Ultimately, it¡¯s why I try to capture the wind, sun, and surf. It is there, where joy seems the most alive. That is also why I physically go to the place and experience it first hand. While I paint I can bask in that warmth. I don¡¯t approach it with a detailed plan. Like the surfers I am trying to go with the flow. I¡¯m not concerned with being too vague or abstract. I am confident that since it is coming from my actual experience, it is my expression¡¯s truest form.

The work is a mix of reality and fantasy. The reality is I¡¯m there looking at the waves, but in their ebb and flow I see abstraction. It¡¯s moving, and it¡¯s surreal, so I try to allow the expression of that.
Also, I love art. I use its language. I emphasize the rhythm of brush strokes and surface texture. I use fresh and cheerful colors. I try to convey more of how it feels than how it looks. While I employ complementary and primary color schemes, I often favor a full spectrum. It seems natural to use all the colours. I also try to utilize the liquidity/fluidity of fine art materials. I use media (Liquin) and high quality Oil paint. I want to tell my stories with vivid colours and flowing brushwork.
For me, this has indeed become a ¡®vital fantasy¡¯. I will continue to visit new shores and share with people from around the world.

Winter sea painting work on the site is always challenging and full of adventures.
The dynamic and vibrant appearance of the site always resonate my heart.
Waking up at dawn and greeting sunrise in sub-zero temperatures is a special thing that can only be experienced in winter.
In Ulsan ¡°Ganjeolgot¡±, we can see large vessels and fishing boats working with bright lights. Whenever I see this, my heart is full of energy and I start working hard with them.

Even in the daytime, the temperature is very low. Therefore I put layers of clothes and try to work as quickly and speedily as possible.

I have to put canvas as close as to waves, thus finding right spot for putting canvas is very dangerous when strong winds blow or the waves are pushed irregularly. However, the more the weather is twisted, the more thrilling I got and my painting be.
In this case, the expression of dancing with the waves on the canvas with a painting brush and knife is more suitable than just painting the waves.
It¡¯s like I become a surfer/windsurfer riding winds and waves and it just blow my mind away and when I realize the day already goes by.
Falling into the trance naturally add lots of changes and transitions to my paintings. So working in the ocean is even more interesting because of the unpredictable quality of water.

Sunrise at Gangeolgot Beach with Artist Kim Chang Han

One cannot simply paint. Preparations must be made, easels placed, the box of paints with a palette is set up, the canvas is secured to the easels so the wind can¡¯t topple it. These are the steps taken prior to beginning to paint. The artist is also preparing mentally and emotionally. His passion for his work enables him to rise at 4:30 in order to arrive at the beach by 6:30, a half hour before the sun will slide above the horizon.

He observes his surroundings. He notes the temperature the breeze, the quality of the air. His mood is jovial as he soaks in the enveloping environment. As the sky lightens, his anticipation grows. Then the orange orb slips above the distant horizon. Artist Kim absorbs the sun¡¯s rays as if he were a solar powered entity. He gazes intently, breathing in the entire scene, the increasing lightness, the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks below, the breeze on his cheeks, the paintbrush in his hand. After several moments of intent concentration Artist Kim looks at his work, lifts his arm, and makes circular motions with his wrist. Then he zeroes in on a spot, giving it a quick stroke of his brush. Each brush load of paint is appliedafter careful consideration of which colors are needed in what quantity, at which precise place.

Artist Kim¡¯s brush approaches the canvas, not like a dart thrown at a bull¡¯s eye, but rather like a border collie rounding up sheep by running circles.
This day is special. Each sunrise is different, even in the same location. Our location is special. We are at the eastern most point of South Korea. This is where the sun shines first on the peninsula. Throngs of people visit here to watch the first sunrise of the New Year, a common activity in this country which still respects many ancient traditions. We are lucky; the temperature is mild for mid-winter,the wind is light, the sky is clear. It¡¯s a perfect morning for watching the sunrise and for painting it. Artist Kim is filled with enthusiasm.

As the sun rises, the painting begins. The sky¡¯s aspect is constantly changing. The artist must compensate by remembering the sky¡¯s appearance during the instant he is capturing on his canvas. He can¡¯t paint what he presently sees. He must paint from his memory of what he saw. This is a very complex proposition. The whole process amazes me.

The painting that Artist Kim is working on today was started last week. It will be another two weeks before he completes the finishing strokes. The canvas is the largest size that can be transported (162.2 cm by 227.2cm). Artist Kim is using 40 colors of paint, which mix to give about hundreds of different hues in the painting. The blue colors of the ocean predominate and contrast with the orangey-yellow of the sun.

While looking at the painting one can feel the energy of the sun and the powerful force of the sea. Movement is felt through the circular patterns, the angular change of direction of the brush strokes, and the vibrant yellows. Even though the sun in the upper center of the painting draws the viewer¡¯s attention, a greater proportion of the painting is dedicated to the ocean. The sun and the ocean balance one another as part of the natural balance, the harmony of the earth.

My Maehwa paintings reach beyond the mere aesthetic beauty of the subject, bringing to bear symbolic meaning, especially in the realm of Korea¡¯s emotional disposition: the noble character and strong discipline of the dedicated scholar.

It is easy to imagine the tree and its beautiful flowers as symbolic of struggle and life¡¯s perpetual soldiering on. The act of blossoming is both gentle and forceful. The petal¡¯s delicacy contrasts to gnarled boughs and rough twisted trunks. The Maehwa stretches toward the unreachable sky with an unyielding tenacity.

The Maehwa blossom season thrills me. This glorious spectacle fills me with a sobering appreciation. Often, I spend several minutes standing in front of the tree, contemplating its beauty and the emotion it stirs. In addition to the connotations of the soldier¡¯s spirit, the Maehwa touches me personally, reminding me of my hometown in spring. I think of my mother's love when I look at the blossom¡¯s inconceivably graceful form.

From late winter to early spring, the flower buds struggle to burst forth in profusion, until all of heaven and earth is embroidered with leaves and flower petals! The cyclical beauty of nature, the miraculous perpetual cycle of life, and splendid joy - all are present here.

The primary setting of The Maehwa Works, the grounds of aged Buddhist temples, nurtures the senses with the savor of the changing seasons, and infuses these paintings with a lively spirituality.

Some of these works were completed in one sitting, while many of them were created over several years. Returning every year afresh to the thematic connotations of the subject has added depth of meaning along with the layers of paint.

Acrylic paint has availed for the expressive technique of rendering the painting¡¯s backdrop, the structural integrity of the Maehwa. Thus, the figure of the tree remains intact while the oil paints are applied. Taking full advantage of both mediums, the material effect is a rhythm with attributes of watercolor in that it is merry and refreshing. So, it can be said that The Maehwa Works enact a harmonious marriage of the positive traits of disparate materials: those traditionally utilized for the painting of a Korean SooMukhwa, and the more modern materials used in Western paintings, which require their own distinct methodology.

Enlightenment Poem :
Poetry written by a noble monk who has been awakened with the teachings of the Buddha
I find my straw shoes worn out in the mountains and on the plains,
Wandering for spring, all day long to find nothing.
I return to my place to smell the plum blossoms with a smile,
Seeing spring already ripened on the tips of branches.

While painting in the outdoor, the most difficult thing is too much time under the direct sunlight. And the bees and snakes.

The day before yesterday, a bee got into my pants.
At first I thought it was an ant and it was difficult to chase it out of my clothes, so the moment I pressed something with my fingers then the bee stung me on the leg. I carefully removed the bee sting from my body.
It was fine during the day time, but at night, the area where the bee stung became red and I started to feel pain. It is said that when people are stung by a bee, the irritation is most severe 48 hours later.
The second day the pain was going down that I was stung by a bee.
When I paint in a flower garden from Spring to Fall, bees surely come not only to the flowers, but also to my paintings and palette. Some of bees fall in love with my painting so look around the canvas or sit briefly on the canvas, but unfortunately another bees are immersed in oil paint on a palette. It means those bees exchange their life for a moment of joy.

Yesterday, a snake appeared while I was drawing.
The place where the easel was set up was a place with lush grass next to a stream, perfect for the snakes to play. While I was working, my eyes were drawing hollyhocks toward the sky on the other side of the stream, so I couldn't see what was happening beneath my feet. But for a moment, I had a strange feeling, so I turned my gaze to the grass by the stream, I could feel that one movement. And then slowly a long snake¡¯s gesture was revealed.
The snake circled around a few times and then pointed its long body upward like a wave. At first, I repeatedly made footsteps to divert the snake's gaze, but it was no use. So, I did a big menacing gestures and footsteps, and then the snakes ran away like a lightning.

As always, places where nature is alive are full of all kinds of animals and insect.
Fortunately, there are almost no mosquitoes or flies here. I just feel good when cute mountain animals watch me work with curious eyes from afar, or when I see countless dragonflies flying in the sky or a white heron flying leisurely.

The biggest shock I encountered while working outdoors was when I was in the first year in high school in 1980.
One Autumn, while I was painting a watercolor landscape with my easel in a quiet rice field, a snake stopped to my left and raised its head less than a meter away from where I was siting. At that moment, my hand holding the brush and my gaze stopped at the snake. Intuitively (hunch), I felt that if I moved, the snake would attack. For a brief moment, there was a lot of tension. The snake stuck (shoot) out his tongue a few times, then lowered his head and passed by.

Before the shocking situation subsided, a second snake appeared about 20 minutes later. This time the snake came more closer to my body.
The snake appeared next to my right hip and climbed onto the art-box next to my long sitting outstretched right leg. It looked more agile and fierce than the first snake.
I could sense that it was a poisonous snake, as it had a triangular head and agile eyes. At that moment, all I could do was hold (stop) my breath and look at the snake exhausted. Because I was sitting on the grassy land so I couldn't run away immediately.
After a period of extreme tension, the snake leisurely disappeared from the art-box into the rice paddy (field). Immediately, I grabbed all the Art supplies, got on my bike and got out of there at the speed of a bullet(very fast).

< Vital fantasy in the Summer - Breezing Petals >
Korea peninsula in July is in the middle of the heat, where the average temperature reaches over 30 degrees celsius.
After spending all day under flaming weather while burning my creative enthusiasm, the earth flames like melting pot.
The sun shines so bright and brilliant in the Summer.
Followings are features of the paintings.

First – The feeling of Speed and Rhythm
Spreading flowers dancing under sunlight caught my sight and heart.
I was eager to paint and enjoy the feeling like someone who found an oasis in the desert. So I emphasized the speed and rhythm of the painting.

Second - The beauty of blank space
I didn't colored the sky with blue color. Instead I left them as the original state which
has been seasoned for several months, until the yellowish color of linseed emerges after several thin applications of Gesso, followed by a mixture of white oils, linseed and petrol. Through this I emphasized the blank space it self, not by just leaving it alone, but by coloring it with great effort.

Third – The Living color
Oil paint, colored on the best canvas, feels alive, vivid. It also emphasizes fresh and mysterious atmosphere. After spending many years on sight studying colors of living nature, my painting stands out the depth of the color.

Forth - Three dimensional space and Two dimensional expression (description)
Realistic expression on canvas makes us able to feel the depth and space through paintings. I emphasized lines and the feeling of flatness, adding a pictorial taste and freedom to paintings.

Fifth - Living nature
Viper is living in the small ditch underneath the easel. The tall hollyhock flower stems were covered by bees and cicadas which were caught in spider web. Birds were busily moving around me. Wild flowers and various crops in the fields were friendly.

Under the burning sun, nature made me to feel the joy of life with overflowing vitality.

During the 2023 my solo exhibition in Ulsan, someone who has liked my paintings for a long time stopped by the exhibition and said to me.
¡°There is a painting among Mr. Kim¡¯s works that I have been looking at. Is it possible for me to take (purchase) that painting?¡±
So, I asked what kind of painting are you looking for, the art lover pointed to the painting in the printed photo of his work on one side of the exhibition hall and said, ¡°I really want this painting.¡±

The painting was drawn in 2021 with oils with a passionate atmosphere depicting people riding bicycles or jogging in a field of sunflower in full bloom on a riverside bathed in enchanting light. I was embarrassed for a moment. Because it was unclear whether the picture is okay or not. So I asked to check the condition of the painting and then talk again.

In fact, the painting was experimental. I did not want to draw the sunflower series in a normal way like many artists. I wanted to draw my own unique and alive picture.
At that time, the Covid-19 was spreading rapidly and the world was frozen. All people exercising in the picture were wearing masks. To depict this social reality (circumstances) and the sunflower at their peak, the brush strokes were done very quickly. Above all, the painting composition and expression were finished with a very complicated feeling and I felt ashamed, so I placed it deep(hide) in a place where it was not easily seen. Fortunately, the work was good condition so I delivered to the person safely. However, after receiving the money for the work and checking the amount, I had mixed emotions (a flood of emotions).

Because there are two reasons.

First, unlike usual cases, the collector paid me much more than the price I suggested for the painting.

Second, the reason I open my works as a full-time artist is to earn a living for my family and the expenses of my work, that is, to sell my work, so even if I don't feel like it, it is difficult to ignore the demand for paintings that are pretty, beautiful, easy to look at, and that everyone will like. It is an inconvenient reality that it is not possible to do anything, but after penetrating these uncomfortable feelings, the art lover highly evaluated the painting I truly wanted to draw and gave me a considerable amount of money for the work. In addition, the art lover is not his full-time artist bit she he has been drawing for a long time, so she has a great eye for art.

Among the worries of many artists, ¡°They have to draw paintings for sale that the public wants, even if they don¡¯t want to.¡± So, when their work sells enough to make a living, then they can paint whatever they want.¡±
I am also a person with a strong sense of responsibility, so even when things are difficult, I don¡¯t tell others about my regrets.

However, although I have been working hard while only looking at one path, I am not sure how much I have drawn my own picture that I truly want.
During this solo exhibition, I gained reason and courage to draw better paintings even more for the sake of those who highly valued my shameful paintings that I wanted to hide and showed their sincere encouragement through actions

The apple orchard series is particularly close to my heart since early 1990s.
While not truly my boyhood home, the apple orchard reminded me of the feelings of my youth. In the orchard, I felt comfort and relaxation and enjoyed the memories of my youth. My boyhood was a time of wonder at the mysteries of nature, a time of innocence, a time of good health and happiness. Particularly, looking at summer-fresh apples, bursting with life after having survived the growing season, makes my heart stir.

In that one spot and on that one day, I felt all of life's ages, from the young supple nature of the trees, to the dark green leaves of the warm summer days, to the future abundant and refreshing fruit that the trees would bear. Looking at that painting makes me feel like summer, every day.
The scene struck me so strongly that I endured the intense heat of that summer day, ending up looking as if I had just showered. But, I was totally satisfied that I had captured the beauty of the moment.
