대작(캔버스 120호) 13점 작품 감상 ‘얼음장 밑으로 봄은 오고 있다’ Appreciation of 13 large-size Oil paintings Arrival of Spring in the Valley of the Frozen Waterfall
The painting in the center is the one currently being painted on canvas size 120. About 30 paintings on the theme of "Arrival of Spring in the Valley of the Frozen Waterfall," painted from 2020 to 2026, this video shows 13 large-size paintings.
This is my first special winter landscape series on a size 120 canvas. The frozen waterfall was truly spectacular. This painting captures the illusion of the frozen waterfall from a closer perspective. The ice and icicles are stunning when the temperature drops below -10 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, the current lighting conditions are not ideal. I painted a fantastical scene of the ice waterfall, shining like jewels. My first attempt was figurative, but as I continued to paint, it evolved into an abstract form.
The problem is, it's still unclear what I'm going to draw this time. In the figurative ice valley, the sparkling, jewel-like atmosphere transforms into a mystical, abstract atmosphere as the ice melts. The work is currently about 60% complete. I'm debating whether to paint the fantasy of ice in detail, as shown in the left and right images, or to paint the fantastical Maehwa (Plum Tree blossoms) in detail.
This painting captures Maehwa in the frozen waterfall. This painting embodies the joy and excitement of spring, with Maehwa blooming and fluttering. I'm considering incorporating the illusion of ice into the lower section. I could also capture the atmosphere of snowfall. In any case, I'm working on a series titled "Arrival of Spring in the Valley of the Frozen Waterfall.“
This is my 11th painting of this format (vertical painting) with the same horizontal and vertical dimensions. I've been painting in this valley (Daeunsan Mountain, Ulju-gun, Ulsan) for seven years, and I've created a variety of paintings. It's been a lot of fun. A painting should be both fun to paint and fun to look at. And I believe a painting is valuable only when it carries some new meaning. I really like this painting, too.
I love the fresh, clear, mysterious, and energetic feeling I get from seeing and feeling the valley. That's why I visit this valley. I paint not only here, but also at Heebang Falls in Sobaeksan Mountain, Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Let's compare the paintings again, rearranging their positions. The painting on the left is the first in the canvas size of 120 series, painting the mystique of the valley's ice and Maehwa in bloom. It was painted in 2022. This painting, along with several later works, was exhibited at a solo exhibition.
The private museum director came and eagerly sought to collect two large-size paintings, one of the same size and subject matter, along with another. However, at the time, I was aiming to create at least ten canvas which is the same size of the vertical paintings of winter landscapes. However, because this was my first painting, I couldn't sell it. It was crucial to continue developing my work by comparing it to this painting.
So, I didn't sell this painting. Instead, I sold a same sized painting of an frozen valley, painted above the waterfall. This painting also captured the flow of the frozen valley's water and its painterly feel well.
I'm still thinking about this painting, comparing it to others. It's difficult to judge it solely on this one, so I compare it to other paintings. That's why I make my final judgment by comparing "Arrival of Spring in the Valley of the Frozen Waterfall" from various angles and perspectives. It's important that each painting has its own distinct personality, and that they all connect with each other, creating a majestic atmosphere that resonates with each other and their individuality.
Anyway, every winter, I feel excited. The melting ice shines like jewels, and Maehwa blossoms bloom. This yellow flower is Arrival of Spring opMae (One of Plum Tree blossom). I love feeling the joy of spring and the ecstasy of life. I painted more than half of this painting, feeling the energy overflowing. I need to organize it a bit more and highlight the key points. I compared the first painting I painted with the most recent one.
I painted various scenes reflecting the passage of time. I loved the way the ice on the frozen waterfall sparkled as it melted. I was so captivated by its jewel-like brilliance that I decided to create this series. These two paintings capture the fantasy of the frozen waterfall.
I really like these two paintings. The canvas is primed, and as I mentioned earlier about the importance of primed canvas, after applying the prime, the rough rocky feel, the dripping of water droplets, and so on... The paint clumps are firmly fixed, preventing them from falling or cracking without special force, and the colors shine brightly. These effects are truly captivating.
So, after purchasing the canvas, I devoted myself to the primer. I applied Gesso, then oil paint, and waited several months for it to dry before I started painting in earnest. This is the new canvas I'll be painting on tomorrow. The bitter cold has been here since yesterday, and the temperature has dropped significantly here since yesterday, but the temperature in the valley is much lower. That's why the ice will be beautifully frozen.
So, I primed the canvas and painted it while keeping the background effect as much as possible, and this is the result.
So, I painted in the valleys of Daeunsan Mountain in Ulsan and Heebang Falls in Sobaeksan Mountain in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Snow falls on Sobaeksan Mountain even in April. The sight of snow and ice intertwined is truly mystical and beautiful. I visited those places and painted when it snowed heavily or when there was a lot of ice. I will continue to visit and paint there in the future.
So, I'm painting a series of works that capture the fantasy of snow and ice in the valley, and the joy and excitement of spring's arrival. I'm currently working on my tenth painting in the same size and format (120P). I display my work here in my studio and at home, and some have been sold. The painting in the background is in 120F format. The paintings in the foreground are in 120P format, with the long side of the canvas being the same. I'm also working on a landscape painting.
Anyway, I'm currently painting on my tenth series of vertical paintings on 120p canvas. I painted two oil paintings on 120p canvas at Heebang Falls in Sobaeksan Mountain. Last year and the year before, there was a lot of snow, which made working easier. This year, the ice was beautifully frozen, so I painted it with emphasis.
The painting on the side is a recently completed Maehwa painting. The yellow flowers are a sibling of Maehwa blossoms, blooming first in winter. I captured the feeling of Maehwa and the frozen valley of Daeunsan Mountain on canvas. The oil paints dried, and if I had to observe the painting, it would have been difficult to finish in one year, so I finally completed it this time. The valley is truly mystical and beautiful.
You said you've been working on a series of works on the theme "Arrival of Spring in the Valley of the Frozen Waterfall" for several years. This painting is different in size from the others. It's a 120F canvas. These two canvases share the same composition and are a single work. The other paintings could be connected or stand alone. I really like this one.
Originally, when I first attempted this painting, I didn't paint it in the mountains, but on the winter sea. The sea also freezes in the cold of winter. And the East Sea has rough waves in winter. I paint that dynamic, cold feeling, along with the sunrise.
To emphasize this dynamic, I started at the seaside. Then, upon seeing the ice waterfall in the nearby Daewunsan Ice Valley, I was immediately thrilled. I immediately moved to a different location, painting the frozen waterfall, and then to a place where Maehwa blossoms bloom around the same time.
The Maehwa blossoms at Yangsan Tongdosa Temple bloom even in January. The Maehwa blossoms on the right are the plum blossoms. I painted them with great pleasure. I've been painting plum blossoms for 23 years, and this year, the plum blossoms were truly magnificent.
So, I enjoyed painting the powerful energy of the frozen waterfall and the Maehwa blossoms blooming through the winter. Th Maehwa blossoms on the right are the red plum blossoms (or plum blossoms) of Tongdosa Temple. Of all the Maehwa blossoms, I've painted Maehwa blossoms the most. I painted this one because I liked the expression. The mati?re effect was right...
Maehwa is usually about the size of a fingernail, so they need to be seen up close. From a distance, they look like simple dots, which is how most artists paint them. I use a knife to draw them in great detail, including the stamens, petals, and sepals.
This is a painting I made of wild Maehwa blossoms blooming in the fields behind Tongdosa Temple. I also painted JajangMae, or red Maehwa blossoms, and green Maehwa blossoms. The frozen valley with its powerful water flowing down, the frozen ice, yet the sparkling effect as the water melted, was truly mystical and captivating. It was so clear and pure. I plan to go back tomorrow to paint this valley, where the ice must have frozen beautifully in the bitter cold.
But while painting such a large picture, I also had to paint smaller ones... The picture on the right is the frozen Valley of Daeunsan Mountain in Ulsan, and the picture on the left is Heebang Falls in Sobaeksan Mountain. While the locations are different, this painting captures the chilling feeling of winter that can be felt during this season, and depicts icicles hanging in clusters.
This is where I descend into the valley. If I get the chance, I plan to paint on smaller canvases and display them in the exhibition. In any case, the reason I paint a series of large paintings like this is because
they move me more deeply. It also allows me to express more of my abilities. The emotions and excitement I feel on-site are even more evident when I paint large-scale paintings.
The three works shown above are also part of the series "Arrival of Spring in the Valley of the Frozen Waterfall." The painting on the right depicts Heebang Falls in Sobaeksan Mountain, Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, when it snowed.
The middle and left paintings show icicles hanging from Daeunsan Mountain in Ulju County, Ulsan. The two paintings are connected, and they're truly beautiful. The frozen ice and dangling icicles evoke the "sound of spring coming beneath the ice." That's why I added the fantastical atmosphere of Maehwa blossoms blooming at the waterfall.
These three paintings were all painted in 2024. I took my canvas to the snowy Huibangsa Falls and had a blast painting them.
Although in a different location, I've been painting the same subject for years. The lighting isn't natural, so the colors look muted. With a good lighting, the paintings come alive. My paintings are characterized by their vivid, lively, and clear colors. Although I paint in oil, I emphasize a clear, light feeling that isn't cloudy.
