The ¡°Winter Sea¡± themed pieces were made ¡°en plein air¡± between 2013 and 2015. Most of my art is made on-site, through direct observation and study. I feel this is important. To perceive the immense energy of the sea you need to be near it.
When I¡¯m painting, I go as close to the ocean as it will allow me. Its intensity inspires me. Through this process I feel as though I transcend painting and become more like a performer, or monk, calling our attention to the holy power of the sea.
Millions of tiny water droplets fly about, hurdled by piercing wind. Roaring, the waves crash against the rocks with a ceaseless rhythm. The seemingly unforgiving darkness of night finally gives way to the blossoming sun. It is truly a rapturous perfection to behold.
For most, it is easy to connect a simple longing to be happy, and going to see the crashing waves at sunrise. I allow my fascination to draw me even nearer toward the ocean, to step toward the surging waves, to step closer toward the mystery, and through the ritual of painting I connect. For me this is a necessary experience. I think it¡¯s important to connect, to fill our hearts, to be inspired by nature¡¯s magnificence.

I began this work during the summer months of 2014. I was interested in the various people, the ever-changing-mystical-nature of the ocean, and their relationship to each other at Haeundae Beach. Now, during the final stages, the 9 canvases connect and depict a view of Haeundae in all directions.
When I look at this picture I think of endless fun, happy inner change, and serene calmness. It makes me want to paint for a long time.
The ¡®Sea-Vital Fantasy¡¯ series has gone through many changes. Looking closely at the artwork, you can see the levels of change through color and translucency. I want my art to portray the vibrancy and profundity of things that are alive. I get as close to this as my brush and materials will let me.
