Sunrise at Gangeolgot Beach with Artist Kim Chang Han
By Martha K. Straw

One cannot simply paint. Preparations must be made, easels placed, the box of paints with a palette is set up, the canvas is secured to the easels so the wind can¡¯t topple it. These are the steps taken prior to beginning to paint. The artist is also preparing mentally and emotionally. His passion for his work enables him to rise at 4:30 in order to arrive at the beach by 6:30, a half hour before the sun will slide above the horizon.

He observes his surroundings. He notes the temperature the breeze, the quality of the air. His mood is jovial as he soaks in the enveloping environment. As the sky lightens, his anticipation grows. Then the orange orb slips above the distant horizon. Artist Kim absorbs the sun¡¯s rays as if he were a solar powered entity. He gazes intently, breathing in the entire scene, the increasing lightness, the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks below, the breeze on his cheeks, the paintbrush in his hand. After several moments of intent concentration Artist Kim looks at his work, lifts his arm, and makes circular motions with his wrist. Then he zeroes in on a spot, giving it a quick stroke of his brush. Each brush load of paint is appliedafter careful consideration of which colors are needed in what quantity, at which precise place.

Artist Kim¡¯s brush approaches the canvas, not like a dart thrown at a bull¡¯s eye, but rather like a border collie rounding up sheep by running circles.
This day is special. Each sunrise is different, even in the same location. Our location is special. We are at the eastern most point of South Korea. This is where the sun shines first on the peninsula. Throngs of people visit here to watch the first sunrise of the New Year, a common activity in this country which still respects many ancient traditions. We are lucky; the temperature is mild for mid-winter,the wind is light, the sky is clear. It¡¯s a perfect morning for watching the sunrise and for painting it. Artist Kim is filled with enthusiasm.

As the sun rises, the painting begins. The sky¡¯s aspect is constantly changing. The artist must compensate by remembering the sky¡¯s appearance during the instant he is capturing on his canvas. He can¡¯t paint what he presently sees. He must paint from his memory of what he saw. This is a very complex proposition. The whole process amazes me.

The painting that Artist Kim is working on today was started last week. It will be another two weeks before he completes the finishing strokes. The canvas is the largest size that can be transported (162.2 cm by 227.2cm). Artist Kim is using 40 colors of paint, which mix to give about hundreds of different hues in the painting. The blue colors of the ocean predominate and contrast with the orangey-yellow of the sun.

While looking at the painting one can feel the energy of the sun and the powerful force of the sea. Movement is felt through the circular patterns, the angular change of direction of the brush strokes, and the vibrant yellows. Even though the sun in the upper center of the painting draws the viewer¡¯s attention, a greater proportion of the painting is dedicated to the ocean. The sun and the ocean balance one another as part of the natural balance, the harmony of the earth.

The sun rises in the East Sea (<01/2011)
I wanted to make the new paintings, not only because of the natural beauty, but also the vivid feeling of hope, ambition and joy of life which I felt in that place.
Looking at the sun rising, I can see two things – little fishing boats and huge ships that are floating on the horizon. Many big ships are coming and going between the Ulsan national industrial park and the sea. It is a thrilling moment to see the powerful day's beginning -the break of day.

When I was painting on site, someone said, ¡®The waves are surging up angrily.¡¯
I am always fascinated at surging waves. Especially, when I see dark-blue waves raging up to a crescendo, and come crashing, rolling down. I feel these beats of life, as if Mother Nature lives and breathes. It is not easy to paint outdoors, but I want to paint more large-sized paintings of this subject.

Most of the works that I did this year were painted in oils on canvas. My fascination with surfers, waves, and sunrise, each expressed with several simple forms. I see the freedom of the brushes touch, its strength, and abundance in the material of oil.
