최근작업 : 바람불어 좋은 날 - 연꽃의 환상(경주 연꽃단지 ~ 밀양 아리나 연꽃단지)

7월 중순부터 시작한 연꽃 시리즈(100호P 캔버스) 두 작품을 몇 일전 완성했다.
이번 여름, 너무 더웠기에 이 그림을 보면 아직도 그때의 기억이 생생하다.

용광로처럼, 태양은 지구를 불태웠고, 연꽃과 연잎은 넘치는 생명력으로 찬란한 생명의 환희를 느끼게 했다. 온종일 땀 흘리며 그렸지만 작업 내내 기분 좋게 그렸다.

작품의 생명력과 깊이감 그리고 나만의 개성적 표현에 대해 고민하면서 그렸다.
특히, 연꽃 시리즈는 올 여름 처음 시도했고, 해바라기 시리즈는 코로나 펜데믹 부터 시작했다. 수십 년간 그림을 그렸지만 가장 대중적인 이 두 가지 소재를 그리지 않은 것은 너무 많은 화가들이 그렸고 어디를 가든지 그림과 사진을 볼 수 있기에 너무 통속적인 것 같아 의식적으로 피했다. 하지만 세월이 흐르면서 내 마음도 유연해지는 것 같다.

작품에서는 소재 선택도 중요하지만 무엇을 그리든 화가만의 개성적인 표현과 독창성이 더 중요하다. 내 그림에서는 일관된 역동적인 생명력의 표현이 중요한 구성요소이다. 그리고 그림을 보는 즐거움과 그림 그리는 즐거움도 중요하다. 앞으로 이 두 가지 소재는 20년 이상 탐구해온 매화시리즈에 이어 흥미진지하게 진행할 계획이다.

지난주부터 새 캔버스에 시작한 황금빛으로 물든 연꽃작품(100호F)도 이번 주말까지 끝낼 계획이다. 아울러 해바라기 시리즈는 당분간 계속 현장에서 작업 중이다.

I completed finished the two big size works of the lotus series, which I started in mid-July. This summer, the weather was so hot that I still vividly remember that time when I look at this picture.

Like a furnace, the sun burned the earth, and the lotus flowers and leaves made me feel the brilliant joy of life with my overflowing vitality. Although I drew sweat all day, I felt good throughout the work. In particular, the Lotus series was attempted for the first time this summer, and the Sunflower series began during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Although I have been painting for decades, I consciously avoided these two most popular subject because I felt they were too conventional because so many artists painted them so you can see the paintings and photographs everywhere.
But as time goes by, my mind seems to become more flexible.

The choice of material/subject is important in a work of art, but the artist's individual expression and creativity/originality are more important no matter what paints.
In my paintings, the expression of consistent Dynamic Vitality is an important component. And the pleasure of looking at a picture and the pleasure of drawing it are also important. I plan to pursue these two subjects in an exciting way, following the Maehwa (Plum blossoms) series that I have been exploring for over 20 years.

I also plan to finish the golden Lotus painting (No. 100F), which I started on a new big canvas last week, by the end of this week.
Additionally, the sunflower series is still being worked on site for the time being.
