Title: Spring in my Hometown

‘고향의 봄’展을 열면서,,,

이번 전시는 캔버스에 유채로
겨울 소백산, 매화, 사과 꽃, 사과나무, 콩밭, 고추밭, 꽃밭 그림을 펼친다.
작품은 대부분 최근 몇 년간 경북 봉화와 영주에서 그렸다.
겨울 산에서 봄의 만개, 가을의 결실까지 이어지는 과정을 보여준다.

봉화는 내 그림의 터전을 이룬 삶의 현장이다.
나는 영주에서 유년시절을 보냈고,
83년 서울로 미술대학교를 가면서 영주를 떠났다.
이후 아버님은 직장을 그만두고 봉화에 사과농사를 지으러 집을 옮겼다.
따라서 약40년 동안 봉화에 자주 방문하면서 자연스레 삶과 자연을 캔버스에 담았다.

금번 전시의 주된 모티브는 자연이다. 작품의 대부분은 야외에서 그렸다.
내 그림의 초창기 주된 내용인 잠자리와 사과 과수원을 소재로 그린 것은 90년 초부터였다. 특히 봄꽃이 피는 시간은 너무나 짧기 때문에 항상 아쉬움을 느꼈다.
‘고향의 봄’展에서 담고자한 것은 자연의 미(美)만은 아니다.
내 마음속 고향에 대한 그리움과 삶에 대한 이상향 담고자 했다.

나는 중학교 때부터 들과 산으로 그림 그리러 다니기 시작했다.
야외에서 그림 그리는 것은 나의 유일한 취미활동이며 휴식시간이었다.
각종 도구를 겹겹이 챙겨서 작열(灼熱)하는 태양 아래 하루 종일 몰두한다는 것이 결코 쉬운 일은 아니지만 어찌 그림 그리는 기쁨과 비교할 수 있을까!
특히, 야외에서 그림 그리는 것은 그림에 생명력과 깊이감을 표현하는데 많은 도움이 된다.

매년 봄이 되면 소백산 아래 영주와 봉화는 꽃들로 장관을 이룬다.
너무나 흔한 것이지만 가만히 보면 어린시절 뒷동산에서 뛰놀던 추억들이 떠올라 마음이 설렌다. 배고픈 어린 시절 진달래꽃을 한껏 따먹으면서 짙푸른 분홍빛에 취해 해가 지는 것도 잊고 하루 종일 뒷동산에서 뛰놀던 그때가 그립다.
이곳은 수천 년 역사를 간직한 대자연의 장엄함과 오묘한 신비스러움을 매년 봄이 되면 찬란한 꽃 잔치를 펼치면서 내 가슴속에 또 다른 마음의 고향으로 다가오고 있다.

2025, 봄

This is my 55th solo exhibition.
In this exhibition, I will be showing about 30 paintings in oils on canvas.
Most of these were painted within the recent years in Bonghwa and Yeongju.

Bonghwa is the place where my life and paintings are based.
I spent my childhood in Yeongju and left in 1983 when I went to an Art University in Seoul. After that, my father quit his job and moved to Bonghwa to start an Apple farm. So I visited Bonghwa often and naturally put things about life and nature on canvas. As I have been visiting in this beautiful Bonghwa for about forty years has made it the hometown of my heart.

The main motif of this exhibition is Blossoms and Fruiting, including the Sobaeksan Mountain in Winter, Maehwa (Plum Tree) Blossoms, Apple Blossoms, Apple Tree, Bean Farm, Red Pepper Farm and Flower Garden. It shows the process from dormancy in late winter to full bloom in spring and fruiting in fall.
Although this seasonal cycle is quite common, it always makes my heart leap with reminiscence of my childhood days on the hillside and mountain which used to be my playground. I long for the time when I was too much absorbed in play to think of the sunset, satisfying my hunger with azalea and being drunk with its dark pink color.

Since childhood, I have often gone out to sketch and paint on hillsides and in fields.
Making art outdoors is not only my most fulfilling pastime, from which I derive great rest and rejuvenation, but also one of the research activities through which I can devote myself to my professions as artist and writer.
It is never easy to make outdoor excursions with various supplies and equipment, and it can be laborious to be absorbed in painting under a scorching sun for many hours of the day, yet none of these hardships can compromise the joy of rendering natural glory into a piece of art.
In particular, painting outdoors helps a lot in adding Vitality (Living feeling) and Depth of the paintings.

Throughout my career, I have usually made nature the major subject of my paintings. Most of my works have involved outdoor sketching and painting.
I have painted dragonflies and apple orchards for a long time. During this period, wild flowers occasionally appeared in my paintings. Concerning the brief life of flowers in spring, I have always felt the desire to express some of the feelings that they inspire in me.
What I want to incorporate into Spring in my Hometown is not only the beauty of nature, but also a nostalgic sense of a homeplace well-loved, as well as a longing and hunger for natural utopia or Shangri-la.

이번 겨울 소백산에 자주 올라갔는데,
그곳에는 눈이 많이 오기에 설중매를 그리기 좋았다.
희방폭포 앞에서도 자주 그림 그렸다.
I often climbed Mt. Sobaek this winter.
It snowed a lot there, so it was good paint a Snowy Maehwa.
I also often painted in front of Heebang Falls.

Part C 사과 나무 = 9점 Apple Tree

나는 청/녹색을 많이 좋아하는데,
속도감과 역동적인 힘과 에너지가 넘치는 그림을 즐겨 그렸다.
이런 표현은 사과나무 뿐만 아니라 다른 그림을 그릴 때도 비슷하다.
I like blue/green colors a lot.
I enjoy painting pictures that are full of speed, dynamic power, and energy.
This expression is similar not only to Apple Trees but also to other paintings.

부모님이 계셨던 시골집 앞마당엔 꽃이 많았다.
이 그림은 채송화 꽃인데, 2년 동안 그렸다.
There were many flowers in the front yard of my parents’s country home.

Part E 콩/고추밭, 벼 = 3점

이 그림은 콩밭이다.
봉화엔 콩/고추 등 밭농사를 많이 한다.
낙엽이 물든 가운데,
콩도 고추도 벼도 자연과 함께 색이 익어가고,
장엄한 분위기가 너무 좋았다.
This picture is of a Bean Farm.
There is a lot of field farming In Bonghwa, including soybeans and peppers.
As the fallen leaves change color,
The Beans, Red Peppers and Rices are also ripen in harmony with nature.
I loved the majestic atmosphere.

유화그림들 중 가장 오래된,
83년 대학1학년 때 그린 자화상도 1점 함께 전시한다.
The oldest oil painting, I will exhibit my Self-portrait oil painting that I painted freshman at Art college in 1983.

‘누정전시관’ 소개
주소: 누정갤러리(정자문화생활관) : 경북 봉화군 봉성면 부랭이길 88

금번 전시가 열리는
‘누정갤러리’는 ‘누정전시관’ 시설 중 한곳으로 이곳은 국내 유일 누각과 정자에 관한 모든 것이 체계적으로 전시되어 있다. 봉화에는 100개가 넘는 누정이 남아있다. 전통 누정의 가치와 소중한 문화유산을 체험할 수 있는 곳이다.

‘정자문화생활관’은 누정전시관과 한 울타리에 있다.
누각과 정자를 테마로 한 관광지로, 숙박시설, 특히 누정오경과 함께 누정문화를 직접 체험할 수 있다. 활관 내 누정 전시관, 야외 정자 정원, 누정 쉼터와 마당도 이용할 수 있다. 인근에 산림욕장과 다덕약수터, 자연휴양림 등이 있다.
