서울 월드아트페어 페스티벌’ 초대작가로 작품을 출품한다.
아트페어 초대 제안이 왔을 때 어떤 작품을 출품할지 생각했다.
나는 주로 자연주의적인 풍경을 즐겨 그리지만
가끔 도시 풍경이나 사람들 삶의 모습도 그린다.
As an invited artist for the ‘Seoul World Art Fair Festival’, I will be exhibiting two canvases.
When I was invited to an Art Fair, I thought what kind of painting I would exhibit.
I mostly enjoy painting naturalistic landscapes,
but sometimes I also paint cityscapes or scenes of life.

최종 결정한 것은 미얀마에서 그린 작품이다.
이 작품은 마그웨이(Magway)의 원시적인 야성과
인간의 맑고 순수함이 살아있는 곳에서 몇 일 동안 그렸다.
The work I decided to exhibit is that I painted in Myanmar.
This work captures the primitive wildness of Magway.
I painted for several days in a place where people have pure and innocence.

원시적인 야성 :
그림을 그렸던 곳은 마그웨이 도시 외곽지역이다.
인간의 손길이 닿지 않은 자연그대로의 순수함과 그곳에서 자라는 소떼들,
그리고 원주민은 도시적인 삶에 익숙한 내 눈에는 너무나 신선하고 강렬했다.
신비스런 풀들과 나뭇잎 그리고 땅 색깔은 내 마음을 사로잡아서
마그웨이에 머무는 동안 대부분의 시간을 이곳에서 그림 그렸다.
마그웨이는 교육의 도시이다. 6개의 대학교가 있어서 젊은이들이 많다.

Primitive Wildness: The place where the picture was painted is the outskirts of Magway City.
The purity of nature untouched by human hands, the herds of cattle growing there,
and the natives were so fresh and intense to my eyes accustomed to urban life.
The mysterious grasses, leaves, and colors of the earth captivated my heart,
so I spent most of time painting here during my stay in Magway.
There are six universities, so there are many young people.

인간의 순수함 :
그곳에서 작업할 때 내 곁을 지나던 수많은 소떼와 소떼를 몰던 청년,
가끔씩 지나가는 사람들, 모두가 내게는 극도의 경계대상이었다.
낯선 이방인으로 거의 의사소통의 되지 않는 상태에서,
그리고 언제 야생동물/뱀/독벌레가 나타날지 모르는 위험 상황으로
온종일 팽팽한 긴장감이 감돌았다.

Human Purity: When I was painting there, the herds of cattle and the young men who drove them,
and the occasional people passing by, were all extremely wary of me.
As strangers, with little communication,
and in a dangerous situation where wild animals/snakes/poisonous insects might appear at any moment,
There was a tense atmosphere all day long.

그러한 와중에 주변에 사는 원주민 부부가 다가왔다.
그들은 내가 뜨거운 뙤약볕에서 작업하는 모습을 보고 그늘 막을 설치했다.
그리고 내가 목마를까봐 마실 것을 줬다.
그리고 배 고플까봐 잡곡밥과 삶은 땅콩도 줬다.
처음 그들을 극도의 경계심으로 대했던 때와는 달리 그들의 환대에 감동했다.
몇 일간 작업을 마치고 마그웨이를 떠날 때 이 분들께 특별히 감사의 인사를 하고 싶었는데, 돌아갈 때는 정반대 길 이었기에 감사의 인사도 하지 못한 무거운 마음이 지금까지 남아있다. 마그웨이를 다시 방문한다면 제일먼저 이분들을 찾고 싶다.

In the meantime, a native couple approached me.
They set up a shade shelter when they saw me working in the hot, scorching sun.
They gave me something to drink in case I got thirsty.
They also gave me mixed grain rice and boiled peanuts.
Unlike when I first treated them with extreme caution, I was touched by their hospitality.
When I left Magway after painting for a few days, I wanted to say my special gratitude to them,
I still have a heavy heart because I couldn't even say thank them because I went the opposite way when I returned.
If I visit Magway again, the first thing I want to do is find these people.

2018, 2019 미얀마를 두차례 방문하면서
During my two visits to Myanmar in 2018 and 2019,
미얀마 여러 지역에서 현지 작가들과 함께 그림 그렸다.
I interacted with local artists in various regions and painted together.
이후에도 계속 방문하려 했지만 미얀마 내전과 코로나 펜데믹
I tried to visit again, but the national troubling by the army in Myanmar, the Covid-19 pandemic,
그리고 2025년 대규모 지진으로 안타까운 세월이 지나고 있다.
and the big earthquake last year have made the years go by regrettably.
그러나 지금도 그리운 미얀마 친구들과 계속 교류하고 있다.
However, I still continue to keep in touch with my Myanmar friends whom I miss.
미얀마는 내게 세상을 보는 눈을 더 넓게 해 주었고,
Myanmar has broadened my perspective on the world,
삶과 예술에 대해 많은 생각을 갖게 했다.
and has given me a lot to think about life and art.
그리고 내가 살고있는 대한민국에 대해 많은 것을 비교해본다.
And I compare many things about the Republic of Korea where I live.

다양한 이야기는 앞으로 단계적으로 영상에 담을 것이다.
