2024, 2025 각각 2주 동안 베트남 현지를 방문해서 그렸던 그림을 소개합니다. 2025년 10월 2일 한국으로 돌아오는 비행기 안에서 그동안 그곳에서 있었던 일들을 되돌아봅니다. 많은 사람들이 떠나고 돌아오는 것처럼 저 역시 그러했습니다. 보름 전 베트남으로 떠나기 전 부산의 모습입니다. 부산 김해 공항을 올라가서 하늘을 훨훨 날아가면서 약 4시간 후 베트남 하노이 공항에 도착했습니다. 하늘에서 바라본 한국과 베트남은 별 차이 없었지만 공기와 빛깔 느낌이 많이 다르게 와 닿았습니다. 현지에 도착하니 비가 오고 있었습니다. 약속했던 리무진 버스를 갈아타고 하이퐁으로 갔습니다. 지금 보는 모습은 작년 하이퐁에 갔을 때 그곳 작가들과 바닷가에서 그림 그리던 모습입니다. 두 작가 분들의 환대로 작년에도 일주일, 금년에도 일주일 동안 소중한 시간을 함께 했습니다. 수십 년에 한번 있을 듯한 강력한 태풍이 하이퐁과 베트남 전역을 덮쳤습니다. 수도, 전기, 인터넷, 교통 모든 것이 마비도어 엄청난 피해를 보았는데, 바로 그때 저를 초대한 하이퐁 미술협회 회장 칸의 취임식이 있었습니다. 태풍이 닥치기 전날 칸의 집에 초대되어 그의 아끼는 작품들과 삶의 이야기를 나눴습니다. 그리고 제가 베트남을 오기로 결심하게 된 동기를 이룬 루의 작품과 그가 속한 미술협회도 둘러보고 그곳작가들의 작업 모습도 지켜보았습니다. 루 친구 분과 칸 미술협회 회장 두 분의 환대 속에서 늘 작업을 순조롭게 작업을 진행할 수 있었습니다. 하이퐁뿐만 아니라 하노이 그리고 이번에 Cat Ba 섬을 방문할 때도 모든 것이 원활하게 이루어졌습니다. 1박2일 동안 하이퐁 Cat Ba 섬에서 50여명의 작가 분들과 함께 했습니다. 뒤에 보이는 분들은 모두 악기를 연주하던 하이퐁 출신 화가 분 들입니다. 약 50여명의, 화가/교사/학생/학부모들이 함께 모여서 뜻깊은 시간을 보냈습니다. 여기는 하노이입니다. 베트남에서 가장 인상 깊은 것은 거대한 오토바이의 물결입니다. 하노이에서 해외여행관련 사업을 하는 Tony를 만난 것도 큰 기쁨입니다. 베트남에서 작업하는데 많은 도움을 받습니다. 하노이 Hoan Keim 호주주변에 매주 이렇게 매주 주말 이렇게 많은 사람들이 나와서 개인별로 혹은 동호회별로 운동하던 모습은 매우 인상 있었습니다. 베트남에서 역동적인 삶의 모습을 지켜볼 수 있었고, 건강하고 활기찬 삶의 모습을 볼 수 있어서 캔버스에 담을 수 있는 정말 가장 훌륭한 소재 중 한 가지였습니다. 가치 있는 그림이란 어떤 것일까요? 그리는 화가 입장에서는 즐거움이 가득한 그림일 것 입니다. 감상하는 사람 역시 마찬가지입니다. 그림을 혹은 화가를 보았을 때 즐거움을 느끼고 의미와 행복함을 얻을 수 있다면 그것은 분명 훌륭한 그림일 것입니다. 제가 화구를 챙기고 이곳 베트남까지 와서 그림 그린 가장 큰 이유는 그림 그리는 그 자체의 새로운 즐거움을 얻기 위한 것입니다. 이렇게 역동적이고 활기차게 살아가는 사람들의 모습을 보면서 설레는 제 마음을 그림에 새로운 형식으로 창조적인 그림으로 나타내고 싶었습니다. 용광로처럼 뜨겁게 녹아들면서 활기차게 열심히 살아가는 베트남 사람들의 삶의 모습과 신비로운 자연이 가득한 모습을 보면 제 마음이 설레고 그것을 그릴때면 즐거움이 가득합니다. 그래서 앞으로도 그런 즐거움과 의미 있는 가치를 찾아 이곳을 계속 찾을 것입니다. Introducing paintings I drew while visiting Vietnam for two weeks each in 2024 and 2025. On the plane returning to Korea on October 1, 2024, I look back on what happened there. Just as many people leave and come back, so did I. This is what Busan looked like before leaving for Vietnam 15 days ago. I flew up to Gimhae Airport in Busan and flew through the sky, arriving at Hanoi Airport in Vietnam 4 hours later. There wasn't much difference between Korea and Vietnam when look at in the sky, but the color of the air quite different. It was raining when I arrived at the airport. I took the promised limousine bus and went to Hai Phong. This is a scene from when I went to Hai Phong last year and was painting on the beach with the artists. Thanks to the hospitality of the two artists, we spent precious time together for one week last year and one week this year. A terrible typhoon, one that only occurs once in decades, struck Hai Phong and all of Vietnam. Water supply, electricity, internet, and transportation were all severely damaged. At that time, there was an inauguration ceremony for Khanh, the president of the Hai Phong Art Association, who invited me. The day before the typhoon hit, I was invited to Khanh's home to share his favorite works and life stories. I also looked around Luc's work and the art association he belonged to, which motivated me to come to Vietnam, and observed the work of local artists. I was always able to proceed smoothly with my work thanks to the hospitality of my friend Luc and the president Khanh of the Art Association. Everything went smoothly not only in Haiphong, but also in Hanoi and this time in Gapa island area. I spent 2 days and 1 night with about 50 people on Cat Ba Island, Haiphong. The people in the background are all painters from Hai Phong who played musical instruments. About 50, artists/teachers/students/parents, gathered together and had a meaningful time. This is in Hanoi. The most impressive thing about Vietnam is the huge waves of motorcycles. I was also very nice to meet Tony, who runs an overseas travel business in Hanoi. I have a lot of help in my work in Vietnam. It is very impressive to see so many people come out every weekend around Hoan Kiem lake, Ha Noi and exercise individually or in groups. I was able to observe the dynamic life in Vietnam, and see the healthy and vibrant life, which was truly one of the best subjects to capture on canvas. What makes a painting valuable? For the artist, it's a painting filled with joy. The same goes for the viewer. If looking at a painting or the artist brings joy, and a sense of meaning and happiness, then it's undoubtedly a great painting. The main reason I packed my paintbrush and came all the way to Vietnam to paint was to discover a new joy in the act of painting itself. I wanted to express the excitement I felt seeing these dynamic and vibrant people in my paintings in a new, creative way. Seeing the vibrant and hard-working lives of the Vietnamese people, who live as passionately as a smelting furnace, and the mystical nature surrounding them, fills my heart with excitement, and drawing them fills me with joy.
